Potty Training Bells

How to use

  • The key to the bells working is you HAVE to be consistent, and you must ALWAYS believe your dog has to potty when they ring the bell once they start learning to use it.
  • Every time you take your puppy out to potty, shake the bell and say lots go potty. They will start to associate that noise with the door being opened.
  • Try to learn when they go as each puppy is a little different. Some go before they will eat, and others are after.
  • Most need to pee within 15 minutes of drinking water, so keep a close eye on them after they drink and take them out soon.
  • As soon as they eat, go outside and do not come back in until they go.
  • If they don't go you can leave them in their crate for a few minutes to keep a close eye on them and try again in about 15-30 minutes.
  • Keeping them on a feeding schedule will help as they tend to go after eating on an empty stomach.
  • When they do go, make a party out of it. "Yay! You pottied!" Pet them, run and play with them.
  • When they first came home at 8 weeks, make it a habit to take them out about once every hour the first week. If you're watching TV, do it between shows.
  • If they have an accident inside, clean really good with an enzyme cleaner so they can't smell where they went before. Don't whip them, rub their nose in it or talk harshly to them. Take a deep breath, ring the bells and go outside asap. Of course they probably won't go again, but if you can catch him within 5 seconds they can learn to associate it correctly. If you wait too long they have no clue what they got in trouble for. Clean it up when you get back in with the enzyme cleaner.
  • Crate training can help them learn good habits like don't potty where you sleep. Their last meal shouldn't be too late in the evening. It's best to have the crate where you can hear your puppy if it whines to go potty. If it does, take it outside asap. Try to get a routine where you take it out half way through the night. This will decrease as it gets older and they may sleep through the night. When they start ringing the bell themselves to go out, you HAVE to believe them and take them out even if it ends up they just wants to play.
